Twitter doesn’t click with me!!

The micro-blogging service twitter is the latest fad on the internet, at least in India. It has been highly popular since it won the South by Southwest Web Award in March 2007…and the Japanese love it ^_^. Though it is only now that it has picked up in popularity and addiction in India.

I have always been reluctant about everything that promises addiction and I rarely initiate. I always rely on the tried and the tested (at least in things that consume time). So I don’t use things until they become household names. Probably that’s the reason why I joined Orkut and Facebook relatively late and it took me some zillion time units to become active on it. So it was obvious for me to be highly skeptical about something that most of my friends don’t even know about…twitter.

But the growing popularity of micro-blogging took the better of me and I jumped overboard about a month back. I loved the logo and the simplicity with which it works. After that though, it has been constant disappointment. The tag line with twitter is “What are you doing”..!!! Which actually is a turn-off for someone like me because I am mostly doing NOTHING. The exact motive of twitter is to bring all the chatterboxes together under one roof.

It is also called a social-networking service which again is something its not..!!..because you can not interact with people until u make them follow you. Follow…??..what..??..well yes exactly…You can see tweets on your homepage of the people you follow. Its analogous to RSS I suppose. But why exactly would someone follow me if I am not a bloody celeb..? The popular guys (the ones who follow very few but are followed by a lot) that I follow there include a guy with the day-job at MS and is in ‘new media and web’ and is quiet a celeb, an NRI girl who has about 1500 follower and I am still figuring out the reason, a guy who loves biking and tweets mostly about his road trips (interesting), another women who actually is a real celebrity related to fashion (1800 followers)..I myself have just 13 followers..mostly consisting of my friends and a few people who obviously expect me to follow them in return.

Most of the popular users tweet a lot..about 15-20 tweets a day..!! I tried to do the same…tweeted about almost everything..sparing the minute details like me self backscratching :-D …but then I am not online all day long…but wait they have a solution for that as well…twitter from mobile web…and twitter from SMS…whoa…!! Height of compulsive addiction..??..maybe…

Actually it turns out to be more pain than fun…Its tiring..!..and I don’t even want to type every little detail about my day…I see no point in keeping archival storage of irrelevant things that will probably be read by nobody…!!

So screw you tweeter…!! BTW if you are having your doubts over joining it or not…DON’t if :

  • You are not exactly the man (or women) of few words. One tweet allows only 140 words.(Yes, its Micro blogging after all..!!)
  • You don’t LIVE on the internet.
  • You don’t want to share every filthy little detail of what you did all day! (as if they are forcing you ^-^).
  • You are a guy. Female users somehow manage to get a lot of followers (I wonder why..).
  • You are uncomfortable with the word “follow”.

I may be irrational in my approach and very few may agree with me, but it just doesn’t click with me.
